Hunger - a growing global crisis
|
This year there is not a day that goes by that we do not hear of the current global economic crisis - Banks going bankrupt, home foreclosures, big companies hanging on the brink of closing their doors; yet there is a silent crisis that is growing at an alarming rate due to the economic crisis and that is its impact on the poor around the world. The United Nations’ Standing Committee on Nutrition recently reported that there are many more children and pregnant women who are not getting the food they need. The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization reported that 100 million more people are hungry compared with last year, bringing the total to a staggering 1.02 billion people worldwide, that is roughly 3 out of every 20 people in the world.
The global recession has, one way or another, hit us all but we must not forget those who are often forgotten. To learn more about this growing crisis please visit www.unscn.org
