December 2009

Dear Supporter of HOPE,

We are entering a time of the year when giving gifts is on most people's mind. No matter your religious persuasion, it seems that December is a time when we tend to think a little more about others and express our appreciation to people we care about by offering them a gift. I am sure you will agree with me that is very satisfying for people to thank you for thinking of them. It is the thought that counts! As you consider who to give to and what to give this holiday season, please spare a thought for families who have nothing.

I have often taken HOPE members and partners from Japan to projects to meet the families they have helped. One thing that always strikes the visitor from Japan is the significant change that their gift made for a poor a family and how grateful the family is for help. The great thing about HOPE Gifts, such as a well, or a cow or a school, is that these gifts are not simply acts of charity, but they actually help lift a family out of poverty so that they can become givers too. Time and time again, we see HOPE families who were once desperate caught in extreme poverty, are now independent and helping others.

So, as you make up your list of gifts and recipients this holiday season, spare a moment and take a look at the Gift Catalog and give a gift that is truly life changing.

Thanks,
Lowell Sheppard
